The heatwave experienced in Cape Town on Saturday morning did not deter the Bishops U13A cricket side from notching up another victory this season when they were hosted at Wynberg. Having only lost to Peninsula Academy CC they are proving to be a well-oiled unit playing some very effective cricket.

Mika Ekström, the Wynberg captain, won the toss and decided to bat first in a time format match. The opening batsmen only manged to add ten runs for Wynberg before Daiyaan Solomons was caught at point by Robert Lancefield off the bowling of Byron Cranswick.

Mika batted sensibly against some very disciplined bowling striking the odd boundary and taking advantage of the few loose deliveries on offer. He struck two big sixes and three fours in his innings of 38 to record the top score of the match - a feat he has achieved seven times this season in a total of twelve matches that he has played. On eight occasions he has been the top scorer for his team.

Once he was caught on the long-on boundary in attempting to strike another six, the Wynberg wickets tumbled too often and too soon to leave Wynberg all out for 103 runs after 33 overs. Donovan Opie made a valiant effort to score big runs for the hosts as he struck 19 runs off 13 balls.

Wynberg innings highlights:

Batting:

Mika Ekström - 38 runs

Donovan Opie - 19

Bowling:

Redwald Aspinall - 6 overs, 2 maidens, 2 wides, 4 wickets for 16 runs

Richard Baikoff - 7 overs, 1 maiden, 6 wides, 3 wickets for 13 runs

Wynberg total: 103 all out

Bishops came out to bat and had to face the heat not only of the sun, but also the pace of opening bowler Mika who bowled a maiden followed by a wicket maiden when he bowled Nikolai Pitrowski.

In the very next over Kieran Adams picked up the wicket of Jeremy Hudson by bowling him. Bishops were on 4/2 after 4 overs. Responsible batting by the middle order saw Bishops eke out a win as they reached the winning total of 104 runs in the thirty-sixth over.

Particularly impressive for Bishops was Richard Baikoff who batted for 135 minutes and faced 114 balls in scoring 21 not out. Special mention must go to Michael Burton who also toughed it out in batting for 62 minutes facing 50 balls and scoring 20 runs.
