Grey School from Port Elizabeth travelled to Cape Town to participate in a number of sporting and cultural activities this weekend and emerged with their pride intact as they were largely victorious.
At the Junior School level Grey won convincingly in all the rugby matches. The main game of the day (U13A) shaped up as a physical confrontation with Grey containing two particularly strong boys at number eight and thirteen.
Wynberg did a superb job in the first half to contain the attacking strength of the visitors and applied plenty of pressure of their own. Although Grey outscored their hosts by three tries to one in the first half, Wynberg were very much in the game at halftime with a well worked try by Brian Foster which was converted by Mika Ekström, who added a penalty too. Halftime 19-10 to Grey.
The second half saw the visitors pile on the points as Grey's outside centre scored four tries in a six try total to leave the home side stranded. Final score 40-10 to Grey! With Grey Junior School playing barefoot rugby it was left up to Wynberg to adapt and this may have had a bearing on their second-half display.
At the high school things were not much better on the rugby field as only Wynberg's 3rd XV, 6th XV and the U15B sides recorded victories on the day.
The 1st XV game was a spectacle in that Grey gave their hosts a lesson in ball retention and running rugby. Halftime score was 32-3 and fulltime was 51-10 with an avalance of tries by the visiting side.
