Kenridge U13A side impress as Wynberg's batting fails

Saturday morning saw Kenridge Primary School travel from Durbanville to Wynberg for their annual cricket clash. With perfect weather on hand Kenridge captain Jonathan Jeffrey had no hesitation in deciding to bat on winning the toss.

Wynberg's opening bowling pair of Mika Ekström and Kieran Adams bowled very well during their opening spell to restrict the visiting batsmen to 15/1 after 8 overs. The wicket to fall was that of Keegan Collier who scored four runs in 26 balls before he was caught by Nawaaz Cassiem off Kieran's bowling.

Shortly thereafter Keegan's opening partner Rutger la Cock trudged back to the dressing-room having been bowled by Wynerbg's left-arm spinner Tim Grills for 9 runs off 22 deliveries.

The spin duo of Tim and Aaron Alexander kept the overall scoring rate to under 3 an over until the 16th over when Aaron was struck for two fours and a six on top of the wide that was bowled. Those fifteen runs provided the innings with good impetus and took Kenridge's score to 49/2.

Jason Vermaak batting at three for the visitors played a workman-like innings constructed from seven fours and two sixes, one being struck out of the ground. He ended on 46 after being caught and bowled by Chigo Iwegbuna off a top edged delivery in the 26th over. Kenridge were 85/3.

Aaron picked up the wickets of Jonathan Jeffrey (21) and Jouberto Greef (19) in his sixth over. Jonathan was caught while Jouberto was stumped by wicket keeper Daiyaan Solomons. The score was 124/5 after 42 overs.

Mika and Kieran were brought back into the attack in the 37th and 38th overs repsectively. Mika struggled with his line as he bowled 3 wides in his first over back but more importantly he managed to pick up the wicket of Alex Halvorsen by softening him up with a short delivery that struck the batsman in his chest and in the very next delivery bowled middle stump out of the ground with a full delivery.

Kieran continued to bowl a great line length and ended with the superbly economical figures of 8 overs, 1 wicket for 7 runs.

Mika bowled a double wicket maiden in his final over as he had MZ Malunga caught behind off another shorter delivery that brushed the batsman's glove. The very next ball he removed the middle stump out the ground again as Evan May registered a duck.

Wynberg's reply got off to a disastrous start as Mika was bowled off a wonderful delivery by Thomas Shand that swung in late and hit off stump. Shortly thereafter newcomer to the side Taahir Issacs was bowled by Ryan Perry without scoring. The hosts were struggling on 6/2 and things got even worse when Jaryd Philp departed without scoring a few balls later. The score was 8/3.

Wynberg's master-blaster Donovan Opie strode to the wicket and was the only batsman to reach double figures as he crafted an unusually responsible innings of 19 runs from 38 balls. With Reece Thomas who stood his ground for 80 minutes facing 68 balls and scoring 8 runs a partnership of 33 runs emerged.

The rest of the batting from the home team capitulated far too easily as they slumped to 54 all out. The bowling from Kenridge was disciplined and backed by good fielding. An alarming statistic for the home team is the number of extras they bowled (44) compared to that of their opponents (15).
