Rondebosch U13A pip Wynberg in a tense game

Wynberg Rugby

An injury struck Wynberg Boys U13A side travelled to Rondebosch on Tuesday, to tackle a very well drilled and in form Bosch team. After school matches are never easy, but both teams were up for the challenge as the pre match banter had already started while the sides were in Durban touring.

Rondebosch started the match stronger, playing their expansive game while Wynberg spent most of the first half on defence. Excellent conditions allowed the game to be free flowing and played at a high intensity. Rondebosch were rewarded with two first half tries from their outside centre, both un-converted. Half time score saw Rondebosch leading 10-0.

Wynberg, a team who prides itself on never giving up, started the second half like a house on fire. It was now their turn to attack and show everyone how dangerous they can be. The team got their reward when Keegan Afrika crossed the white line for Wynbergs’ first try. Brian Foster converted and this made the score 10-7 in Rondeboschs’ favour. Game on.

Rondebosch were rattled, but a silly error from Wynberg allowed Bosch in for another five pointer. The try was again un-converted. The score now 15-7.

Wynberg kept their heads up and kept working hard. The gaps were now opening up in the Rondebosch defence. Labib Kannemeyer and Ayanda Mkhonto, the teams centre pairing for the day, were becoming a handful for Rondebosch, and this gave Wynberg hope for a possible comeback win. Keegan Afrika crossed over for his second try of the day but unfortunately Brian Foster couldn’t convert. The score was now 15-12 with three minutes to go.

The last three minutes was all Wynberg, and when Labib Kannemeyer broke the line it looked as if the dream comeback was on. Some great defence from Rondebosch eventually saw the ball end up in touch and the final whistle blown. Rondebosch held on for a 15-12 win. Both teams must be congratulated on a great game of rugby. Referee Joey Salmon deserves credit for the way he blew the game, allowing it to be free flowing and en excellent advertisement for Junior School rugby. Rondebosch meet Bishops in their final game of the term, while Wynberg take on rivals SACS on June 23rd.
