On Thursday 23rd June SACS U13A rugby side hosted Wynberg for an afternoon game that had to be moved to the top fields due to the amount of standing water on their regular playing fields.
Conditions were difficult as temperatures had plummeted overnight and heavy rains had fallen which resulted in numerous muddy patches. The game would be decided by the team displaying superior handling skills and making fewer mistakes.
The first half was totally dominated by SACS as they camped in the Wynberg half and had it not been for the visitor's strong defence - twice the ball was held up as SACS drove over the Wynberg tryline - and also the large number of spilled passes by the hosts the halftime score would have been a lot higher than the 10-0 that it was.
The points for SACS came through two unconverted tries in quick succession and it seemed at the time as if the scoring would continue in favour of the hosts but huge praise can be heaped on the Wynberg defensive effort as they stood firm in the tackle thereafter.
There were brief glimpses of possible attacks for the visitors but the majority of the game was played in their half with the hosts enjoying a far superior possession stake.
In the second half things were much the same with SACS enjoying the territorial and possession stats, but Wynberg held firm and produced one or two magical moments of their own.
With the rain teeming down in the latter stages of the match, no score was recorded in the second half and the match ended in a 10-0 victory for SACS.
With a stronger and more mobile pack of forwards SACS looked to dominate this area of play and there were moments when they achieved just this but Wynberg managed to snuff out most of their attacking flair by nullifying their hard-running backs with a well-structured defence.
Although the Wynberg forwards spent most of the match on the back-foot they fought hard to contain their stronger opponents and largely achieved this.
In the end the difference between the two sides was the two first-half tries which were scored as a result of missed tackles.
