The Wynberg Boys Junior U13A rugby side had the privilege of attending their second rugby tour this year, as they travelled to Durban to participate in the Durban Prep 2011 Rugby Festival. The side left in the early morning of June 8th, and would return to Cape Town on Sunday the 12th.
Game one would be a tricky encounter against Johannesburg based Trinity House, who the boys had met earlier in the year at the Rondebosch Festival. Trinity who were looking for revenge came out firing, and Wynberg did well to soak up the early pressure. Wynberg eventually found their momentum and ran out 15-5 winners, getting their tour off to a solid start.
Fridays fixture saw another “round 2” game, as Wynberg met Merchiston who they also met at the Rondebosch festival in April. Conditions were terrible, and at one stage the game didn’t look like it would go ahead. Luckily this was the morning’s first game so the field was still in decent condition. Again Wynberg struggled in the first half. Second half was much better, as the boys in blue and white stripes adapted to the slippery ball and ended up 36-5 winners.
The last game of tour was to be played against Durban Development who had struggled in their previous two games. Wynberg were confident and were keen to end the tour on a high note. The fields were extremely muddy and again the ball slippery. Wynberg started strong and were rewarded with early tries. The game was very stop start, which didn’t allow Wynberg to play their flowing game plan, but the boys adjusted nicely and ran in eight tries, unfortunately all un-converted. The final score was 40-5.
Once again the boys must be congratulated on their excellent behavior, both on and off the field. There was nothing but compliments from both Durban staff and parents.
Well done to the team for being the only Cape Town team to achieve 3 wins from 3 games. This was the goal before tour, and it was great to achieve it!
