WBJS U12A continue their winning ways

Hayden Nicholson clears from the base of the scrum

Wynberg's U12A side showed good composure and tenacity in overcoming a 60-0 drubbing at the hands of the same opponents in last year's away fixture. Although hosts Wynberg had only spent the past week training without boots to accommodate the visitors, they coped well on match day.

The first half started well for the hosts in that Worcester conceded a penalty from their kick-off and Wynberg flyhalf Mika Ekström was able to take play into the visitor's half where they camped for a period of sustained pressure by the forwards. After a number of forays onto the Worcester tryline finally their defensive resolve broke and Wynberg's eigthman Austin Ford dotted down for the opening score of the match. The conversion attempt by right-wing Aaron was wide of the mark.

A period of revival by the visitors saw them threatening the home team's 22m area, but an individual piece of brilliance by Ekström saw him kick an up-and-under from inside his own 22m. Worcester made the mistake of letting the ball bounce and it found its way into the arms of the chasing Ekström who ran the length of the field evading three tacklers on route to score in the corner. The conversion attempt failed and the score was 10-0 in favour of Wynberg.

Worcester attacked with purpose from their kick-off and had a wonderful run down the left touchline thwarted by the solid defence of the home team which took the teams to halftime.

The second half started off where the first left off with Worcester attacking well by using the width of the field through broken play. The defence of Wynberg was strong throughout and the pressure created by the hosts' backline on the visitors saw them under severe pressure with possession of the ball. This resulted in their creative play being stifled and indeed snuffed out but for a bright glimmer mid-way through the half when they managed to attack from broken play and feed the ball wide to their left wing who had the overlap. He ran strongly from outside the Wynberg 22m area to score in the corner. The conversion fell short. The score stood at 10-5 to the home team.

Wynberg attacked well late in the game and came to close to scoring their third with Brian Foster being held up from an impressive drive off the lineout. Worcester managed to defend their line against the strong driving play of the Wynberg forwards and cleared the ball downfield to the sound of the final whistle.

This Wynberg side has had a very solid season in comparison to to their efforts last year. Their record so far this year reads:
