In a friendly set of fixtures held at Wynberg, the touring side Colet Court from the UK were given a lesson in all aspects of rugby this afternoon.
Both the U13A and U12A sides of Wynberg were far too strong for this touring side. The visiting spectators were heard mentioning that the hosts' U12A side looked more like a UK U14 side! No wonder their players suffered in the physical exchanges as Wynberg U12A dominated in all phases of play running in five unanswered tries in the first half and another four in the second.
The team performed well against this opposition with the space afforded them and stuck to their structures well. The forwards punished the opposition and drove hard while the backline ran merry with the amount of possession and space at their disposal. Good performances from captain Brian Foster who led a charged-up forward unit that kept the backline on the front foot, right-wing Aaron Alexander who scored a hat-trick of tries, Kieran Adams at outside center for wonderful timing of the pass, another polished performance from Mika Ekström at flyhalf, Jonathan Petersen who scored twice as well as Shane Orderson at inside center.
The U13 side did not quite enjoy the same dominance, but they certainly stamped their authority on the match by some clever tactical play and good execution by the half-back combination of Kyle Tatersall and Jordan Holgate. Once they visitors' tryline had been bridged for the first time by a wonderful run down the left touch by flyhalf Holgate, it was not long before the physical pressure exerted by the forwards took its toll and Wynberg were able to score twice more in the first half through good use of their powerful wings Bruce and Zubeyer.
The second half saw the visitors produce a spark of inspired play in holding the Wynberg side at bay through some solid defence, but the intensity and quality of the Wynberg play led to the inevitable score by the hard-running backline. Two more tries followed by Uzaid Johnson at outside center and Zubayer on the wing with Monray Rodwell's powerful running on the wing as a substitute late in the game reminding me of a certain Jonah Lomu in his heyday at the 1995 Rugby World Cup!
Both these Wynberg sides will have enjoyed this run as a lead in to their big away fixture against Bishops on Saturday!
