WBJS U13A bounce back to beat Bishops

Century scorers
Wynberg's recent centurions Rayyaan Meyer, Jordan Holgate and Mika Ekström

On Saturday Wynberg hosted the Bishops U13A cricket team in the annual 50 over game between these two sides.

For the third week in a row the weather affected the start of the match as persistent drizzle forced a delay to the first ball being bowled. The toss was won by Wynberg captain Jordan Holgate who had no hesitation in sending Bishops in to bat.

The visiting batsmen initially did a sterling job of protecting their wickets in the face of some hostile bowling from Mika Ekström and Jong Min Lee on a damp pitch. Although Wynberg threw their full array of seamers at Bishops they weathered the onslaught well and it was left to Wynberg's slow bowlers to make inroads into the visitor's batting lineup.

Jordan Holgate stepped up and bowled with his usual control and guile to claim a well-deserved four wicket haul while Jarred Philp impressed with his consistent line and length and ended up claiming two scalps.

Bishops slumped from being 60 for 2 wickets after 18 overs to being all out for 100 runs after 36.5 overs.

Bishops innings statistics:

Batting:

Thomas Richardson – 22 runs
Nathan Mngomezulu – 13 runs

Bowling:

Mika Ekström - 6 overs, 1 maiden, 0 wickets for 20 runs

Jong Min Lee - 4 overs, 1 maiden, 1 wicket for 26 runs

Rayaan Meyer - 5 overs, 0 maidens, 1 wicket for 11 runs

Jordan Holgate - 9 overs, 5 maidens, 4 wickets for 10 runs

Ryan Vorster - 3 overs, 0 maidens, 1 wicket for 8 runs

Kieran Adams - 5 overs, 0 maidens, 0 wickets for 10 runs

Jarred Philp - 5 overs, 2 maidens, 2 wickets for 11 runs

Wynberg had 50 overs at their disposal to score 101 runs for victory and the message to the team was simple: occupation of the crease was paramount to achieving the win.

Opening bat Mika Ekström set the tone with a patient 12 runs from 39 balls while two wickets fell at the other end. Jordan Holgate gave the side momentum with his quickfire 21 runs before playing the ball onto his stumps.

All the Wynberg batsmen made contributions to the cause against the good line and length on offer from the Bishops bowlers. Once again the middle order of Ismaeel Galant, Jarred Philp and Dylan Cable understood the task of occupying the crease while keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Jarred underlined his determination and value to the team with his workmanlike effort in scoring 7 runs not out off 43 balls.

Surely one of the major differences between the two sides was the quality of the fielding. Rayyaan Meyer took a difficult one-handed catch on the move at slip for Wynberg while the team only put one catch down. Bishops on the other hand dropped three that were not particularly difficult.

With only one match of the season remaining for this Wynberg team, confidence will have been restored ahead of the much awaited clash against SACS next weekend.
