Wynberg gets SACS into a spin

With overcast, dark weather looming around Table Mountain, SACS U13A hosted Wynberg for a 20/20 game of cricket on Van Zyl field.

Wynberg captain, Mika Ekström won the toss and took the opportunity of batting first. The opening pair of Mika and Kieran Adams set a new batting partnership high for the season in accumulating 96 runs for the first wicket.

Mika was particularly brutal on anything short as he smashed four sixes and seven fours in his innings of 62 off 43 balls. He was out to an excellent catch as he tried to smash another six over the mid-wicket boundary.

Kieran continued to anchor the innings beautifully as Donovan Opie once again set about scoring at a rate well beyond the run-a-ball tempo. Donovan eventually perished for 28 runs (2x6, 3x4) off 16 balls as he tried to hit another six. Wynberg had reached 135/2 in the 19th over when Donovan departed.

Kieran finished the innings with a flourish as he smashed the last ball for six on the on side.

The SACS batting effort got off to a slow start as the wicket was not yielding any pace. After two overs from Mika and three from Kieran the spinners gleefully sprang into action.

With the pitch providing some turn, Tim Grills and Aaron Alexander spun a web around the batsmen. Bowling a good line, but more importantly a fuller length than the hosts had bowled, the batsmen were forced into taking chances in an effort to keep up with the scoring rate.

It was not to be as wickets fell at regular intervals and the required rate became ever more distant.
