Wynberg u13A side win comfortably against South Peninsula Bears.

Due to overnight rain the match between Wynberg U13A and the South Peninsula Bears on Saturday 11th February got off to a late start at WBJS and was restricted to a 35 over game.

Timothy Grills, captain of Wynberg, won the toss and decided to bat. Wynberg batted solidly up front and steadily compiled runs although fours were hard to come by due to the wet outfield.

Wynberg u13A's continue their winning streak in impressive fashion.

On Sunday 12th February Wynberg U13A hosted an English touring team from Bedford Prep. Bedford won the toss and decided to bat in a 50 over contest on a beautiful summers day at WBJS.

Wynberg’s pace attack rattled the visitors up front with early wickets falling to Wade Dollman (4 wickets for 15 runs in 9.3 overs). The first bowling change saw Timothy Grills introduced to the attack, his left arm spin resulting in 2 wickets for 22 runs in 10 overs.

Wynberg's late fight-back creates an exciting finish against Paul Roos.

This past Saturday Wynberg u14A hosted Paul Roos from Stellenbosch and at one stage there were some concerns about the weather, but fortunately the rain stayed away for the most part.

As a result of overnight rain the start was delayed and the match reduced to a 45 over affair. Paul Roos captain, Paul Barnard, won the toss and sent Wynberg in to bat.

Left-arm seamer Wade Dollman takes a fifer to put Bishops under pressure.

On Saturday 4th February the WBJS U13A XI travelled to the Rossal Field for an away fixture against Bishops U13A. Bishops won the toss and decided to bat on a field with short boundaries in all directions.

Wynberg opening bowler Wade Dollman charged in full of aggression and bowled a superb opening maiden that delivered 2 wickets and put Bishops on the back foot right from the start. Wade was ably supported by Kyle Pluke, his opening partner from the other end.

Bishops u14A's show determination and guts to win handsomely

On Saturday Wynberg u14A side travelled to Bishops for a cricket fixture that they would have been looking forward to.

Coming off a resounding win against Pinelands and knowing that Bishops had lost badly to Paarl Gym the previous week the players can be excused for licking their lips in anticipation of another win.

That's exactly where the trouble started. There is a difference between having confidence in your own and your team-mates abilities and an over-confidence based on who you are playing.

Wynberg show intent against Pinelands and win comfortably in season opener.

On Saturday Wynberg u14A hosted Pinelands in the first cricket fixture of the 2012 season and provided plenty of excitement for supporters looking forward to the upcoming fixtures.

Having won the toss, Mika Ekström had no hesitation in deciding to bat first although the wicket had a healthy covering of grass. With a strong batting lineup this proved to be the right decision.

An incorrect result listed in the u13 age-group means that Boland are rightfully the most successful provincial team of 2011 at age-group level across the National Cricket Weeks.

The u13 result between WP and Zimbabwe was intially incorrectly listed as having been won by WP in the first innings.

Although this would have been the case if the game did not progress beyond the first innings or ended in a draw, on the day Zimbabwe went on to win by 8 wickets in a dramatic second innnigs run-chase.

This alters the overall team statistics significantly in that Boland is now clearly the  most successful provincial team across the four age-groups.

Our future cricket stars need to play knock-out cricket at the highest level.

In conversation with a fellow youth cricket enthusiast a few days ago talk turned to the format of the games being played at the National Cricket Weeks. It was understood that the organizers want the boys to play all forms of the game during the week namely the Twenty 20 version, limited overs cricket and time cricket. It was felt however, that the boys would be better served by being placed under the mental pressure of playing in a knock-out format for their respective provinces.

Team performances are compared from this year's tournaments.

If one has a look at the official results (found at WebCricket and provided with this article) of the recently held Inter-Provincial tournaments played across the country for all the age-groups and amalgamates the results, Western Province emerges as the most successful team across the board. They are very closely followed by Boland.

It is interesting to note Zimbabwe's success at the u17 and u13 levels that they participated in. They were ranked 4th and 3rd respectively in these age-groups.

Thoughts on a very successful National u13 Cricket Week held in East London.

In reflecting back on the National u13 Cricket Week in East London this year I would like to start by commenting, as parent of a WP player, firstly on the long journey that each of the players have completed since the initial Zonal and Regional trials started late in 2010.

Although it is inevitable that there will have been players of talent and ability who slipped through the cracks in the process, I firmly believe that the boys selected to represent WP u13A at the cricket week was by and large the strongest possible combination in adhering to the selection criteria.

WP win their final game at the Inter-Provincials to claim second place behind joint winners Boland and Zimbabwe.

On Thursday 15th December, the final day at the National U13 Cricket Week taking place in East London, WP comfortably beat KZN Inland by 54 runs and in so doing claimed a top 3 spot at the tournament. A total of sixteen teams participated in the competition.

December 15, 2011

WP win both T20 games against Northerns and Mpumalanga on Day 3 and beat EP on Day 4.

On Day 3 of the U13 Inter-Provincial Cricket Week being held in East London the teams played two T20 games each. WP finally got their first victory under the belt with a solid showing against Northerns (Titans) from the Pretoria area in their first game of the day.

With the Northerns captain Dean Foxcroft winning the toss he had no hesitation in batting first. This has been a trend at the tournament where players have realised that the wickets tend to get lower and slower as the day progresses.

WP u13A vs Zimbabwe is turned from a lifeless game into a thriller! Scoresheets now attached.

East London - I eventually arrived here yesterday at midday after a very long and tiring journey by car from Cape Town. I drove straight to the venue for the WP u13A cricket side’s second time game of the Inter-Provincial tournament where play was already well underway.

Boland win by 18 runs in a close contest.

On a swelteringly hot day in Paarl the Boland u13A side hosted a 50 over cricket game against neighbours Western Province.

Having won the toss Mika Ekström of WP decided to bat, only to be called back (quite rightly) by the umpire who asked the captains to re-do the toss as he had not been present for the first one.

Boland won the toss this time around and elected to bat on a slowish pitch that was generally regarded by most as one to possibly crumble later in the day.

November 21, 2011

WP u13A continue their winning ways in their build-up to the Inter-Provincial tournament.

On a cold, damp and overcast day at the YMCA field of the Western Province Cricket Club in Rondebosch it was always likely that rain would interrupt play as WP u13A cricket side took on a combined u14 and u13 team from the club in the smash 'n grab version of the game.

Angry and dark clouds threatened rain throughout the match but only bothered the players and umpires during a brief spell in the second innings of the day.

u13 cricketer Joss Morgan currently stands on an astounding 1568 runs for the season at an average of 68.2 with five centuries and seven fifties.

Joss Morgan of Umhlali Preparatory School in KZN is proving to be a thorn in the side of most opponent bowlers as he reaches wonderful heights with his batting.

Joss has really excelled at sport at junior level, playing a great game of soccer, representing his district at tennis, rugby and captain of cricket and has made Natal Schools hockey at A level and cricket at B team level. He was Umhlali Preps Victor Ludorum at athletics, and represents the school at 1st team level at rugby, hockey and captain of the 1st XI cricket.

Young cricketer Mika Ekström is breaking records at Wynberg Boys Junior School

Wynberg Boys Junior School’s stand-out cricketer Mika Ekström is setting the record books alight as he continues to impress at U13 level.

October 15, 2011

Mika Ekström produces a telling all-round perfomance to lead Wynberg to a resounding victory.

Rarely does one primary school team dominate another like Wynberg did this morning against Sweet Valley.

In a game of 40 over cricket played in overcast and cool conditions on a damp and soft pitch Wynberg gave Sweet Valley a humiliating lesson in the game of cricket.

Having won the toss Wynberg elected to bat in difficult conditions displaying great confidence in their batting line-up. This confidence was soon realised on the large yet slow outfield.
