Captain Courageous keeps Wynberg on track

Wynberg rise to the challenge and triumph in severly difficult conditions.

The physical and hard-working Wynberg u14A rugby side had to contend with a new challenge in their bid to extend their winning momentum and we are not in the business of criticising referees but the manner in which this game was handled left a lot to be desired.

The side was literally blown off the field by the referee with the penalty count standing at 17-1 in favour of the opposition. The display was embarassing to the extent that the opposition coach felt the need to apologise to his opposite number after the game.

St Benedicts u14A no match for Wynberg

Wynberg overpower St Benedicts in stormy conditions.

With dark skies overhead and very strong winds ripping across the fields these made for difficult conditions to contend with for scrumhalves and flyhalves wishing to make use of the boot for territory.

With Wynberg u14A's playing into the wind in the first half against St Benedicts who had triumphed 22-7 against Drostdy it seemed as if the hosts had their work cut out for them.

Wynberg Rugby Festival starts with a flourish

Plenty of great rugby makes this festival a wonderful advertisement for school rugby.

Day one of the Wynberg Rugby Festival dawned with wet and overcast conditions and with the promise of more rain in the air some local spectators were well prepared for this outcome with their wellington boots, umbrellas and rain-jackets.

This turned out to be an unnecessary precaution as no more rain fell, but with a chilly wind picking up and the sun making an odd appearance everyone was kept guessing.

Wynberg u14A impress in hard-fought win

St John's (JHB) u14A provide Wynberg with a stern test which they pass with plenty to spare.

Wynberg's u14A rugby side played one of the late games yesterday against a plucky St John's side. With the other Wynberg A sides having won their encounters it was up to this side to continue that trend on the day. They did not disappoint.

Wynberg 1st XV dominate Primrose

Wynberg's much fancied 1st XV team displays all the attributes of a winning combination.

With the earlier games having produced some great running rugby from Wynberg and a never-say-die atttitude from hosts Primrose it was left up to the 1st XV sides to provide a fitting finale to the day at Primrose Rugby Club.

The sides did not disappoint as Primrose surprised with their competence in the forwards in standing up to their much vaunted and heavier opponents. The early exchanges revealed that the hosts were not going to lie down and provided some tense moments as the game see-sawed between the twenty-two meter lines.

Wynberg u14A dismiss Primrose

Wynberg win comfortably against plucky opponents but will rue missed opportunities.

Saturday morning dawned overcast with a persistent cold breeze blowing across the Primrose Rugby Club fields. A portent of things to come perhaps as Wynberg Boys High School stamped their authority on proceedings.

Wynberg u14A's impress against Rondebosch

Wynberg's newest rugby side sweep Rondebosch aside with a powerful display.

Wynberg faced tough traditional opponents Rondebosch in their season opener against local schools yesterday at Rondebosch.

Having lost a warm-up game during the week to a touring side from Dubai through a very disjointed performance the u14A boys were determined to prove that they have what it takes to win games.

Dubai Exiles hold on for win

Wynberg's u14A rugby side falter in their first outing.

Wynberg Boys High School's u14A rugby side took on the Dubai Exiles yesterday on Silverhurst field for their first encounter of the season.

The home side is made up of players from various primary schools making it difficult for coaches and parents to guage the strength of the side. Although the side is richly sprinkled with talented players they will take some time to gel as a unit.

Affies u14A too good for Wynberg

Affies from Pretoria dismantle Wynberg with ease.

On Saturday 25th February Wynberg hosted Affies in an annual friendly fixture at Silverhurst B field.

Wynberg captain Mika Ekström continued his good run with the toss of the coin and had no hesitation in deciding to bat on what looked like a good batting wicket.

Opening partners Nic Faraday and Ubaid Hartley built a solid if unspectactular partnership of 33 runs in 16.3 overs. With the recent batting woes that the team has been experiencing it was the right approach. Protect your wicket and take the singles on offer.

Confidence regained for WBHS u14A's

Wynberg u14A's demolish WPCC batting lineup.

On Saturday Wynberg u14A cricket side were supposed to play an away game against WPCC (Western Province Cricket Club), but had to do some urgent reshuffling of teams and venues at home as WPCC wanted to play the game at the tiny Golden Grove PS field. 

Fortunately things were resolved in the morning and the game was played at Silverhurst B - the home ground for the u14A's.

Wynberg u14A improve but fail to win

Wynberg's late fight-back creates an exciting finish against Paul Roos.

This past Saturday Wynberg u14A hosted Paul Roos from Stellenbosch and at one stage there were some concerns about the weather, but fortunately the rain stayed away for the most part.

As a result of overnight rain the start was delayed and the match reduced to a 45 over affair. Paul Roos captain, Paul Barnard, won the toss and sent Wynberg in to bat.

Wynberg u14A players taught a tough lesson

Bishops u14A's show determination and guts to win handsomely

On Saturday Wynberg u14A side travelled to Bishops for a cricket fixture that they would have been looking forward to.

Coming off a resounding win against Pinelands and knowing that Bishops had lost badly to Paarl Gym the previous week the players can be excused for licking their lips in anticipation of another win.

That's exactly where the trouble started. There is a difference between having confidence in your own and your team-mates abilities and an over-confidence based on who you are playing.

WBHS u14A start cricket season on a positive note

Wynberg show intent against Pinelands and win comfortably in season opener.

On Saturday Wynberg u14A hosted Pinelands in the first cricket fixture of the 2012 season and provided plenty of excitement for supporters looking forward to the upcoming fixtures.

Having won the toss, Mika Ekström had no hesitation in deciding to bat first although the wicket had a healthy covering of grass. With a strong batting lineup this proved to be the right decision.
