It was an intense battle on Saturday afternoon as Wynberg tackled near neighbours Western Province Prep in another all boys derby match. Fresh from a long weekend break, both sides were up for the clash. The weather played its part, as the rain stayed away for long enough to have all fixtures played in dry conditions.

Saturday morning saw the start of the Junior School rugby season, as Wynberg Boys Junior hosted neighbours Primrose Rugby Club. Conditions were overcast, but that didn’t keep the supporters away from witnessing what was a titanic battle between two well drilled teams.

Wynberg, who have just returned from a successful tour to Johannesburg had a lot to prove to their supporters and coaches, as well as themselves, after years of being labelled “an under achieving team.”

Having beaten Wynberg in a tightly contested U13A 20-20 match on Thursday, SACS travelled to Wynberg for a time game on St Patrick’s Day, Saturday 17th March 2012.

The Wynberg U13A XI travelled to Kenridge primary School on Saturday 25th February 2012 for a 40 over contest. Kenridge won the toss and put Wynberg into bat.

After the loss of an early wicket, the Wynberg batsmen got more used to the conditions and applied themselves to the task at hand. The backbone of the innings was provided by Umar Anthony who showed his full repertoire of shots in amassing an excellent 72 runs.

Due to early morning rain a 40 over fixture between WBJS U13A and a touring Cornwall County U13 team on Monday 20th February was reduced to a 20-20 match.

Wynberg batted first on a slow outfield due to the morning’s rain. Early wickets fell as a lethargic looking WBJS failed to pierce the field and get the scoreboard moving. Matthew Mingo batted through the majority of the overs and was the only Wynberg batsman to score significant runs with 26 to his name when he was dismissed towards the end of the innings.

On Sunday 12th February Wynberg U13A hosted an English touring team from Bedford Prep. Bedford won the toss and decided to bat in a 50 over contest on a beautiful summers day at WBJS.

Wynberg’s pace attack rattled the visitors up front with early wickets falling to Wade Dollman (4 wickets for 15 runs in 9.3 overs). The first bowling change saw Timothy Grills introduced to the attack, his left arm spin resulting in 2 wickets for 22 runs in 10 overs.

Wynberg Boys Junior School’s stand-out cricketer Mika Ekström is setting the record books alight as he continues to impress at U13 level.

Wynberg and SACS faced off in the annual end of season derby game at Wynberg Junior on Saturday. SACS who beat Wynberg earlier in the season were coming off three consecutive losses while Wynberg were the in form side having won their last four games. The weather was ideal for a display of running rugby and the crowd turned out in their numbers to witness what was to be a “humdinger” of a game!

Highlights of Wynberg U13A's performance against Bishops played on Sat 13 August 2011.

In this return traditional fixture played at Wynberg this morning in cold and damp conditions, what stood out to me was the gritty and determined defensive effort that the hosts displayed throughout the match. It is without a shadow of a doubt what earned the team their well-deserved victory today - the first time this particular team has beaten Bishops during the four years that I have been watching them play.

Due to the long-weekend approaching the decison was to play this traditional fixture between these two schools over two mid-week afternoons.

So the U9, U10 and U11 teams played on Wednesday afternoon while the U12 and U13 sides played yesterday at Sweet Valley.
